“I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them, but to inform their discretion by education.”
Yes, enlighten the people – inform parents. Perhaps, rather than a mayoral take over for control of public schools, as has happened in the past in D.C. and New York, for example, the mayor should’ve informed parents.
Enlightened them that the mayoral take over was an attempt to take over the ruling power in public education – the teachers’ unions.
Ultimately, public education power belongs to parents. And if or when they don’t understand what is happening in public education, namely, the incessant battle for the hearts and minds of their children, the remedy is not a take over of a take over. . .
Use your authority to educate. Use your position to enlighten those who’ve been stripped of a voice, robbed of their power, and deceived.
Power to the parents! A child’s first, best teacher!
